Fall Home Prep - Attention to seasonal landscaping key

There's a nip of cold in the air, the leaves are starting to fall off the trees and gather in piles on your lawn. The first frost is just around the corner.

No, sorry, your outdoor chores haven't ended, in fact landscaping professionals note this is the season to prime your outdoor plants and lawn for winter. And, for homeowners considering putting their home on the market this fall, realtors suggest brightening up the outside of your home to increase that all-important "curb appeal."

Julea Joseph, owner of Reinventing Space in Palos Park, often acts as a "one-day decorator," for homeowners who want to sell. "You've got ten seconds to make an impression, it's all curb appeal. A lot of people do drive-bys on houses. Within one block, you might have two homes for sale. How does your home differ from Joe Schmoe's down the block?" Joseph asked.

Real estate experts say simply brightening up the landscaping with fall flowers, such as mums can do the trick. Or, Joseph pointed to a new breed of pansies called "icicle pansies," which she recommended for all of her clients last year, "they survive the first snowfall," she explained...

...I Hang a tasteful seasonal wreath on your front door for a warm first impression. Consider re-painting your front door. Joseph suggests a terra-cotta or a cinnamon shade for the front door to tie in nature's seasonal colors. Then, "carry those fall colors into your home," added Joseph...

...If your home is open for an evening showing, turn on all your landscape lights and your front door light, for a welcoming impression. Joseph even recommends swapping out the white lights with a yellow-cast bulb, which can be more welcoming and "harmonious" with the seasonal colors...
